From early satellite programs to today's CubeSats, rocket research, remote sensing, artificial intelligence and space studies, universities continue to develop research and engineering capability.

The next question is how South Africa retains that talent and intellectual property as the commercial space economy grows.

A Satellite & Space SEZ for the Western Cape

From cluster to industry

The Western Cape already has many of the components of a space manufacturing ecosystem.

Stellenbosch and the surrounding region combine engineering companies, satellite manufacturers, universities, research capability and specialist infrastructure.

Solcon Infinity 2026 will table a proposition for a dedicated Satellite & Space Special Economic Zone, anchored on the Stellenbosch–Somerset West–Grabouw corridor.

The proposed conversation will examine how an SEZ could support

  • Assembly, integration and testing
  • High-value component flows
  • Export-led satellite manufacturing
  • Investment into space infrastructure and projects
  • Employment and specialist skills development
